Naive coastal oil from Sweden. We love the wonderful contrast of colours against the deep blues and the movement of this super harbour scene, with jolly flags waving.

It’s the work of Stig Kjellin, a Swedish painter of primarily coastal and city landscapes. He was born in 1914 in Southern Sweden; largely self taught, he exhibited at the Boras Kunst Museum in 1943 and 1956, in Gothenburg in 1945 and 1955, Malmo in 1947 and the Gummesons gallery (one of Scandinavia’s most important modern art galleries launched by book dealer Carl Gummeson in 1912) in Stockholm in 1949 and 1955.

Signed and dated 1939, with a dedication to ‘Susanne’ verso.
